Sara Barrows (she/her) - Postpartum Doula

My Story

Hi, I’m Sara (she/her). Before becoming a postpartum doula, I spent ten years working as a school counselor. I’m now a parent to two children and I live in Wauwatosa—where I also teach pre/postnatal yoga and yoga for babies and kids. Supporting families has always been at the heart of my work, but becoming a parent clarified my desire to focus specifically on the postpartum season and what families truly need during that time.

Like so many parents, I experienced postpartum anxiety after the birth of both of my children. I understand the disorienting transition of welcoming a first baby—the complete shift in routines, priorities, relationships, and identity. I also understand the unique challenges that come with adding another child, when time is already stretched thin and you’re learning how to divide your attention while staying connected to your older child(ren). I know the loneliness that can come with feeling unsupported, and the difficulty of asking for help when you’ve always been the one holding everything together. And I also know the relief—the exhale—that comes when support is finally in place and things begin to feel more balanced.

After my first child was born, I struggled to manage the demands of work and home life. I didn’t know how to ask for help or how to share responsibilities in a way that felt sustainable, and I struggled. All I wanted was to BE with my baby. I was fortunate to have the option to step away from full-time work, but I know that isn’t possible—or desirable—for everyone. What I’ve learned since is that with thoughtful planning and the right support, balance is possible.

I am a certified postpartum doula through DONA International and a certified and registered pre- and postnatal yoga teacher. My master’s-level counseling background continues to inform my work, allowing me to offer care that is both emotionally attuned and deeply respectful. I am CPR certified and insured. My hope is to help you feel supported enough to rest, to heal, and to be more present with your baby—because you deserve care, too.

Firefly Significance

In many traditions, the firefly symbolizes a light in the darkness, representing hope, inner wisdom, and the beauty of life’s most fleeting moments. Just as a firefly illuminates the night with its own self-generated glow, a postpartum doula serves as a steady, quiet presence to help you find your own "inner light" and confidence as a new parent. The name firefly also connects to the city I love, where I chose to raise my babies and where I experienced profound growth in my own motherhood journey. Wauwatosa comes from the Potawatomi word wau-wau-tae-sie, meaning “firefly,” honoring the abundance of fireflies that once illuminated the Menomonee River Valley and the natural beauty of the land.
